New actions against Beijing coming soon, Secretary Pompeo says.
In an interview on Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that President Trump is considering restricting Chinese students from studying in the U.S. The secretary was responding to a question about the administration’s effort to restrict Chinese nationals on student visas and in academic research positions from spying for the government in Beijing.
“I don’t want to get in front of the decisions the president is evaluating,” Secretary Pompeo said. “Look, not every Chinese student who is here is working on behalf of or at the behest of, the direction of the Chinese Communist Party. But it’s something President Trump has taken a serious, serious look at. I think you’ll see more to follow in the coming weeks and months.”
A Chinese national conducting research at the University of Virginia was arrested Friday on federal charges that included an attempt to steal trade secrets and computer intrusion. That arrest was the latest example in an increasing number of cases being brought by federal law enforcement against Chinese nationals allegedly exploiting their positions in academia to commit economic espionage against the U.S.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom and courage for President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and their advisers as they give consideration to limiting Chinese students from studying in the U.S.
- For all U.S. officials working on the myriad challenges to U.S.-China relationship.
